In the end it’s just a foot race

when i was a kid i loved baseball. i would love to watch the games. listen to the radio broadcasts. collect the cards. wear the hats. but my favourite part by far was going out into the backyard with my cousins and playing. We would pretend to be Roberto Alomar or Joe Clark or Carlos Delgado. It was always the seventh game of the world series, bases loaded, 2 outs, and a full count. I always hit the grand slam and the Jays always won.

Today I got back into that zone. This time, though, I wasn’t a second baseman with a wicked batting average or the candidate for the golden glove. This time I was a marathoner. I was a marathoner running in spite of the gods of wind and rain and mid October. I was a marathoner with burning quads taking the lead 30k into the race. I was a marathoner in a finishing sprint to earn those seconds back from the clock.

After watching the River crew light it up at scotia I couldn’t wait to run. I went for one of my longest runs of the season with some great friends and the whole time I was in the zone. I was playing. Pretending to be those tough-as-nails mother lovers, smiling while the wind blew rain in my face.

Congrats to Eric and Reid today. You guys did it your way, in your country, on your terms without doubt and without any excuses. I continue to learn more from you guys every day. Thank you, enjoy your beers, and roll river roll!
